With it’s community friendly atmosphere and focus on personal service, Freddie’s Market has become something of a landmark in Webster Groves and a Bononi tradition.
It all started in 1928 when Alfred Bononi Sr. came over from Italy. he and his brother purchased a farm and grocery store. Eventually the brothers made a deal and Alfred Sr. got the grocery store. In 1948, following in his father’s footsteps, Alfred Jr. (Freddie) bought a neighborhood grocery store in St. Louis. Twenty years later he expanded Freddie’s Market to its present location at Big Bend and Rock Hill Road. Now Freddie’s is in the capable hands of a third generation, Larry and Cathy Bononi, both gradutes of Webster Groves High School, ’72 and ’73.
Freddie’s stocks USDA Choice, aged, hand-cut meats, grass-fed beef, fresh seafood, natural chicken and pork, honey-glazed boneless baked hams and Amish Turkeys. All of which can be prepared for customers in Freddie’s oven or smoker.
“We make sandwiches daily from our Boar’s Head meat/cheese selections and serve Hot Plate Specials for lunch,” Larry Bononi said. “Our deli offers party sandwiches; homemade chicken salad; homemade broccoli, pasta and potato salads; cole slaw; homemade crab dip; fruit and veggie trays; ready-to-eat barbecue beef and pork and much more. Our farm-fresh produce is hand selected and we carry pasture-raised, natural, antibiotic-free feed, non-GMO farm fresh eggs from seven local farmers,” he added.
“We stock over 100 local products and we have an outstanding selection of wines, liquors, beers and Stringbean Coffee. We also make one-inch solid cubed bagged ice. From our bakery, we have homemade breads, gooey butter cake, pies, bagels and cookies baked fresh every day.” he added.
“Freddie’s is located in the heart of your neighborhood and we are very thankful for our employees and customers,” Bononi said. “We offer the best personalized service. Home deliveries are available five days a week.”
